Tell the readers a little bit about yourself.
Mitchel Garza from Athens, TN. I've been attending shows in Knoxville since I
was old enough to drive.
Now I'm twenty-nine. Currently I am performing with
a band called hometown slackers make good.
How do you feel about Knoxville and its music / art scene, what do you feel
you all represent (if anything)?
fun, beer, self-expression.
The times that I’ve been to Knoxville to see a show, gone to the parties, or
just visit, it’s always seemed like the people involved in the independent
music and art scene in Knoxville are all really tight knit and supportive of
one another despite variance of styles and the strong sense of individuality
that each person represents in this community.
- Why do you think this is?
- Is there a common thread that ties you all together despite your different
agendas?
Mostly I'd say it has to do with beer. Everyone around here seems to drink
pretty heavily and have a pretty easy going attitude and a wide appreciation
for
a wide array of styles and influences. We like to listen to everything, as long
as we can get fucked up while doing it.
How are the shows in Knoxville?
Filled with my friends. There have been a couple instances a few years ago when
the Melvins were trying to come through, and a local promoter seemed to think
there wasn't an audience to fulfill their contractual guaranteement. i thought
it was crazy.
Sometimes really huge flavor of the month new metal
bands will get booked that really suck. there's really no medium sized venue.
we've just got the big places and the little places, and expensive big places.
the pilot light has cool shows but there's really no way they could
house the crowd a band like the Melvins would bring.
I have seen melt banana there twice though, and missed the white mice.
Where do you see Knoxville’s music / art scene going in
the next few years?
I’d like to see more bands from Knoxville touring around.
Where do you see your project going?
nowhere, fast!
